That video is a clip of radio towers getting demolished in San Diego on Veteran’s Day in 1995. I was in sixth grade, having just started a new school. I was afraid of big changes that I knew were coming. That September, I had my first dream within a dream—a sheet-drenching nightmare about my family turning into demons.
I watched the felling of these towers from my backyard, although I would have seen it from the opposite vantage point than is portrayed in the above video. At the time, my house backed up to this massive canyon. Those towers were a regular part of my view whenever I looked past my backyard fence. They were especially cool at night when they were just these blinking beacons in the distance I’d watch from my pillow as I drifted off to sleep.
These towers—specifically their demolition—are a resonant image for me.
No wonder I like vaporwave.
What are some resonant images for you? Are they from fiction, life, or both? If you’re a creator, do you strive to put resonant images in your work?
Sound off in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.
Barn Door to Hell is now out in the world. People continue to pick it up, which is nice to see. I’ve also sent some copies to reviewers, and signed hardcover bundles are now available in my store. Head on over and grab one if you’d like. Just be sure to do it soon. Stock is limited.

On the writing front, I’m about a quarter of the way through I Was a Teenage Cult Leader, and I’ve put down about 5,000 words on my collaboration with Wile E. Young. Juggling projects isn’t always ideal, but having one of them be a collaboration certainly helps relieve some of the pressure.
Teenage Cult Leader sounds fun, and I’m sure it will be, but it’s also thematically heavy. It’s too early to tell, but this book may be the marriage between pulpy and literary that I’ve been seeking my entire career.
I should get my cover for Haunted Hearts any day now. When I do, I’ll post it to this newsletter so you all can see it. That one comes out in October, so it should be my next release.
Lots of other stuff going on behind the scenes, including a pinkeye outbreak at home that has managed to affect everyone in my family—some of us twice. I don’t remember it being so awful back when I used to get it, but supposedly, it has adapted over the years to compete with antibiotics, so that’s fun. If I never catch that awful shit again for as long as I live, it will be too soon.
That’s it for now. Thanks to all my new readers and everyone who’s stuck with me over the years. I see you, and I appreciate you. Don’t ever forget it.
As always…

This stuck with me from my younger days. Seriously - the British Government thought this WASN'T horror?! https://youtu.be/KryOYburlFI?si=P1Nh8ppj0z6zOApj
I have a pretty strong memory, so there are many things I would consider resonant images. A lot of them are space-related, like seeing a rocket take off into space when I visited NASA in Florida.
